Pair a Card Reader to Your Kiosk with USB Cable Instead of Bluetooth (US)

This article will explain how to pair a Payment Card Reader via USB Cable instead of Bluetooth to your Kiosk in USA and Canada.

Requirements

  • A Flipdish Kiosk

  • A Flipdish Card Reader

  • A Registered Flipdish Account

Account Access

'Owner' or 'managed owner' of the Flipdish Account.

Hardware Setup

Depending on your Kiosk, the USB connection point will be in a different place.

Instructions

Step 1

Important: The kiosk must first be paired to the card reader via Bluetooth, and THEN you can pair it via USB cable.

Below are the instructions depending on your region, and your hardware devices.

Step 2

Once you have paired your Kiosk with Bluetooth, you can then go to advanced settings and pair it with USB Cable.

Access the Kiosk's advanced settings by pressing and holding on the Flipdish Logo at the bottom right.

When it turns black, remove your finger, then press the logo again and swipe your finger left to see the advanced menu (image below).

Step 3

Press the "Toggle Settings" button.

Then touch anywhere on the left side of the screen to enter the menu to edit settings.

Step 4

This is the settings screen. Select Stripe Terminal option.

Step 5

Press the toggle on the right to turn on the option Prioritize USB over Bluetooth connection.

Step 6

Important! You will see a permissions dialogue from the Android Operating System.

Click Remember this check box and press the Allow button.

Result

The Kiosk app will restart, and the Kiosk should now be connected via USB instead of Bluetooth, which is much more stable and reliable!

Fallback

If the USB is not connected, the Card Reader will automatically fall back to a Bluetooth connection.

Confirmation of Connection

To know if your card reader is connected, you should see the VISA symbol on the home screen in the footer.

To check that it IS connected via USB, you can go into the advanced hidden menu again, and you should see that the text 'Connection type: USB'if you return to the advanced settings screen. See below.

Trouble Shooting Steps

  • If the USB cable is pulled out, just plug it back in and restart the Flipdish app on the Kiosk.

    • Hold your finger on the Flipdish Logo until it is black.

    • Release the logo, then touch again and swipe to the left to bring up advanced Kiosk menu.

    • Press Restart App.

  • If the Kiosk is rebooted, you will need to reconnect the USB connection

    • Hold your finger on the Flipdish Logo until it is black.

    • Release the logo, then touch again and swipe to the left to bring up advanced Kiosk menu.

    • Select Settings -> Stripe Terminal and turn the Prioritize USB toggle off and on again.
